Question
I'm Planning on becoming a rabbit breeder and everyone has to start somewhere, My question is that i have a male Rex rabbit and a female Angora, and was just wondering if that was a safe match to breed. I can understand if it isn't and she's still only young but would i have any problems breeding those two kinds of rabbits?

Answer
Hi Isabelle

If you are planning on becoming a rabbit breeder it is best to breed only purebred rabbits.  Since you have an angora, even though I don't know what kind, it would be in your best interest to invest in a male angora of the same kind.  They tend to bring in larger profits but are a doozy to care for.  They will need to be brushed and trimmed very often.

The angora and the rex are both fur breeds but when you mix them together you never know what you are going to get.

You might also want to join ARBA if you are serious about becoming a breeder.  They will send you an awesome book that tells you how to raise rabbits.  There are already so many mixed breeds that its just crazy to keep mixing them up.  The only time I condone mix breeding is for meat farmers.  Both of the breeds you have could fall under the meat class but you have to decide if you are willing to do that.

The web-site for ARBA is http://www.arba.net  and the initial fee is worth it.  Once you decide what breed you want to raise you can join specialty clubs for that breed also.  They usually send you out a nice book on care etc.

I hope this has helped you.  I am not saying they have to have pedigree's but purebred's are the only way to go.

Good luck

Pam
