Rabbit bting ear

Question
I recently gave a home to a female bunny, as her previous owners could no longer look after her. When I went to feed her today, i realised that her ear had been bleeding-it looked like some of it may have been damaged. I did take her to the vet who has given me a dose of antibiotics-to prevent infection. But i'm worried about why she has hurt herself and how I can prevent her from doing it again.

Answer
If she is not around any other animals it was probably an accident that happened while grooming.  Did the vet also check her for mites?  Perhaps her ears itch.

I have no idea why should would do this to herself unless she had an irritation in that area.  If she continues to self-mutilate you can actually put a little bit of apple bitter spray on the area.  This should deter her from chewing that spot.

You also want to make sure she has plenty of toys.  Untreated wood blocks, plastic toys, cardboard and as much fresh hay as she wants.

It was very kind of you to rescue her and she may just be nervous with her new surroundings.  Just keep an eye on her and follow your vets advice.  If it gets worse please take her back.

Sincerely

Pam
