Question
QUESTION: this morning in my rabbits little inside cage i found she had put all her chest fur on this little patch. then i saw it was moving. i shouted "my bunny has had babies" i was so excited. but then i don't know what to do because i didn't expect her to have kits. and i haven't got a nesting box and i have no idea where to get them from. and also i didn't want to touch them because some people said if you get your scent she will neglect them. so i have no idea what to do. because i usually bring my rabbits inside at 4:30pm. please help me!
Thanks Katie

ANSWER: Hi,

don't move them from where they are, mom already made a nest.  you can touch them, your scent won't make mom neglect them.  Just make sure that mom has plenty of space to rest away from the babies, they stay away most of the time so as not to draw predators to the babies.

You will need to check on them periodically in case any die, you'll need to remove them for the health of the others.

QUESTION: thank you very much. also is it normal if the mum stays away from them for ages? im not sure if she has feed them or not. also how long till untill they leave the nest?
Thanks Katie

Answer
Hi,

yes, mom will only feed them once or twice a day.  Rabbit milk is extremely rich so that they don't need to spend a lot of time there with them.  She may do it when nobody is around so you might not see it.  Staying away is really a safety instinct because any attention she gives being around the nest is bad for the babies, who are totally helpless.  So they stay away, but often within visual range.  That's why the more area you can give her to distance herself from them, but still see them, the better.
