how do i tame this rabbit it is running around garden for food i put apples out but cannot get near it wat do i do

Hi Pauline,

it probably is a domestic rabbit that got away from someone or was abandoned.  Either that or it is an offspring of an abandoned white rabbit and a wild rabbit.

If it is a wild rabbit (which I doubt) you cannot tame it and make it a pet.  In most places it is against the law to capture wild animals and keep them as pets.

However, if it is a domestic, which I would tend to believe it is, you need to put out a proper size live trap (that you can find at a number of outdoor stores, and place a carrot in the trap.  You will have to check the trap every couple of hours because one, you may catch an undesired animal, and second, ifyou catch the rabbit, it's a sitting duck in the trap for other predators, so when you catch him you want to get him inside to a safer area right away.

The rabbit will (MUST) have to have a good rabbit vet examine him because he's been out in the wild.  He will probably have fleas and ticks on him, and probably things in his digestive tract that all will need to be taken care of.  If he's healthy, which he probably is, he should be able to handle the necessary treatments.

You will need to read up on rabbits and their needs.  I suggest reading the articles on the House Rabbit Society web site (www.rabbit.org) - they have hundreds of articles on all aspects of rabbit care.
