Question
QUESTION: I have a lop rabbit around 8 pounds who has been sneezing for many months and i cant really afford to take him to the vet i would like to know which benodyrl and how much to give to alleviate him and are there any other home remedies that i can do to clear out his nose?

ANSWER: Dear Marc,

If your bunny is having trouble breathing, you need to suction his nostrils with a pediatric ear syringe.  But I would not give him Benadryl without consulting a rabbit veterinarian.  This will do no more than help alleviate the symptoms, but the underlying infection will still be there.  Please read:

www.bio.miami.edu/hare/sneezing.html

to see the many possible causes of sneezing in rabbits.  You don't want to treat this if you don't even know the underlying cause.

Your bunny relies on you for veterinary care.  If his sneezing is severe and he has white or yellowish discharge, he needs a vet, not home remedies.  I wish I could tell you otherwise.  I hope you can find a good vet here:

who may be able to work out a payment plan for you.  Just treating an upper respiratory infection should not be too expensive.

I hope this helps.

QUESTION: I forget to mention he is also tearing from one eye this started more recently does that narrow down the list of what it might be?

ANSWER: Dear Marc,

Yes, it does.  As the article I sent you before explains, this means there could be involvement of the molar roots.  Please read:

www.bio.miami.edu/hare/sneezing.html

and

Hope that helps.

Answer
Dear Marc,

I can't tell you what to do with your rabbit.  But do note that some of the ingredients of that product are caustic and/or toxic (e.g., camphor) and are not recommended for use in rabbits.  This type of product is manufactured primarily to separate people from their money, not animals from their infections.  There is nothing in that concoction that isn't somewhat toxic, the idea being that it will kill the bacteria before it kills the host.

The solution is very dilute, so it probably won't harm your rabbit.  I have my doubts that it will give any permanent relief.

Good luck,

Dana
