Cottontail with dangling, broken right hind leg

22 9:50:25

Question
For several days now, a desert cottontail has been hanging around my back yard. I noticed today that it has a broken hind right leg that dangles downward. The cottontail is licking it, and I have put some grass and carrots out for it along with a water bowl. Is there a wildlife rescue or rabbit savvy vet near Santa Fe, New Mexico that can do something for this bunny or is it doomed to die? This bunny seems very docile and seems not to be afraid of me...

Answer
Dear Iris,

I hope this little guy will allow you to herd him into a carrier, or a puppy pen.  It almost seems that he's willing to put aside his fear and let you help him.  Sometimes they are like this, especially when injured or sick.

Please check the wildlife rehabilitator listings here:

If the leg must be amputated, it's possible the decision will be made to euthanize the bunny, unless permanent sanctuary can be found.  A three-legged cottontail cannot survive in the wild for long.

I hope you will be able to help him.  If you want to be referred to a rehabber who will do the BEST for the bunny, and do everything to save him, try to contact Regina Whitman at Desert Cry Wildlife Rescue:

She is in Arizona, but may be able to refer you to someone who can help in your area.

Good luck,

Dana
