Question
I adopted my pet rabbit, Violet, about 2 months ago.  She is spayed, litter box trained, and hops freely around my apartment.  She always uses her litter box until 5 minutes ago when she peed all over me and my bed.  She had been sitting next to me while I petted her for a while.  I stopped petting her and she went about hopping on my bed like she always does.  Then she backed up until I felt her touching my arm and began to urinate everywhere.  After she was done she kept trying to lick me and, after I put her on the floor, she started running around my apartment full speed seeming very happy with herself.  I'm so confused!  Why would she pee on me?

Answer
Hi,

well it could be one of several things, or a combination of things.

Peeing is one way of marking something.  Being on your bed, which smells like you, may lead them to mark it.  It might be because you're female too.  It could also be because being your friend, marking the bed is like marking you.  Rabbits will spray other rabbits to mark them as "theirs".  Which could be why she backed up next to you first. Given she wanted to lick you she obviously loves you.

It also seems that when a rabbit has had some time with a person they really like, and have been relaxing with them awhile, really enjoying being pet or next to the person, sometimes it seems they will just, out of (happiness/contentment/relaxed), pee.

Sometimes if they've been out for awhile and just are so content and happy next to their friend (you) they will just not even want to move, and will just pee right there.

Sometimes they are excited and just pee out of happiness/excitement.

Bottom line though, I would not take this as a sign of being mad or bad behavior.  This is not a litter training issue.  These two things I am certain of.  My moms' own rabbits do this.  It's more because they are happy, they really enjoyed being with you.  She will still use her litterpans.

One thing you can do if you have her on the bed is put a towel down where she went prior, so that if she does it again the towel can absorb it.  Otherwise you may have to lay next to her on the floor and play and snuggle with her there.
