4 month old Asian potbelly pig

Question
Hi, my daughter and her fiance bought a 4 day old male potbelly pig and he is now just over 4 months old.  He's very healthy and is up to date on shots and worming and is due to be fixed on Dec 1st.  He is litter trained to an extent but they have been told by their landlord that he has to go.  My question is if we take him in (we own our own home with a yard and a fenced in area he can play in. Can we still train him to go outside to the bathroom so eventually he won't need the litter box anymore.

Thanks

Answer
Yes, your pig can learn to potty outside instead of in a litter box. Many pigs prefer to potty outside only.

Pigs need to potty frequently until they are about a year old. So if he will be left alone for several hours, he'll need the box for a few more months.

Take him outside to potty as soon as he wakes up in the morning (no breakfast until he potties outside), again after eating. Take him out to potty before and after lunch and dinner. As soon as he wakes up from naps. And if he's been awake for a while, every two hours.

If you live in a very cold climate, it may be uncomfortable for him to go out to potty. Some people set up a temporary windbreak or simple shelter to make going potty outside easier for piggy. For example a simple snow fence to block wind, or a picnic table with a tarp thrown over. Piggy can run next to the fence or under the table to potty without getting too terribly wet or cold.

I highly recommend Priscilla Valentines book Pot-Bellied Pig Behavior and Training. She really understands how pigs think. She goes into potty training in much more detail than I can cover here. Her book is available from her site valentinesperformingpigs.com or amazon.com
