Question
my pot belly cut the meaty part of his thigh on something and its not a long cut but looks deep enough to get infected. should i put neosporin or peroxide on it or will it just heal on its own... i dont want to incurr any vet bills if not necessary but i will if i have to.

Answer
Ouch that sounds painful! I am not a veterinarian and can not give medical advice over the internet.

I can say that pigs have a remarkable ability to heal. But, that remarkable ability is a double-edged sword. If the wound heals over without being cleaned out completely, it will result in an ugly, painful, puss filled abscess.

If piggy will let you flush the wound with water that will help a lot. But chances are that's going to sting and piggy will not appreciate that. You can use any antibiotic spray or ointment made for people. Apply it generously.

Ointments are sticky and bugs, bits of dirt and such can get stuck in the ointment. So if you use ointment, cover it with gauze or cheesecloth, to help keep anything that clings to the ointment out of the wound.

Wash the wound often, two, three, even four times a day, if you can. The goal is to get and keep it clean as it heals. Pigs can get tetanus, so if he was cut by something really dirty or rusty then it's best to consult a veterinarian as soon as possible for a tetanus vaccination.

If the wound doesn't heal, or heals over but forms a large swelling, or piggy acts like it is painful, or stops eating, develops a fever or acts lethargic, then piggy will need to see a veterinarian and antibiotics.
