Holes!

Question
I was wondering if pigs dug holes. If they do, how would I teach them not to before it becomes a habit? To get a pig, we were planning on closing our front yard with a gate, and letting the piggy run around the front yard. And then, we were also planning to make a room under the stairs. That way, it could sleep there at night. Anyway, the front yard has a lot of space and, unlike the backyard, it has virtually no plants for a pig to get into. So, it's almost perfect, except for the fact that we have a lawn. Our lawn is my dad's pride and joy. :o)lol. So, I was wondering how I could prevent the digging of holes before it even starts.

Answer
Our pigs do not root, but we spend most of the day training them or they are in the house.
Boredom causes or contributes  to rooting. It is natural behavior, because pigs in the wild rooted and foraged to survive.
Pigs are smarter than dogs....
leave them alone all day, and they will use their snouts to explore..
their snout is a tool, and we can't expect a pig to do nothing, with its brains.
They love a challenge, and love to know what's under everything...
BLESS you for checking this out first! So few people do.
Depending upon the genetics of your pig, how much time you spend with him, and boredom, there is a good chance your pig could destroy your lawn. No one can guarantee this won't happen.... The pig MUST be neutered or spayed to be a good pet!
So, again, I admire you for researching. The more challenges you give your pig (as expressed in our BEHAVIOR  book at valentinesperformingpigs.com) the less chances your pig will root.
GOOD LUCK!
