Question
hiya
my rat overnight has got a swollen foot (his back right). hes still eating, drinking and climbing about but is dragging his back leg along with him. ive heard about bumblefoot and wondering if it could possibly be that. there doesnt look to be any small cuts around it, also hes still using his leg to groom himself so dont think its broken. im going to take him to the vets first thing in the morning, but just wondering for tonight so i know its not that serious and my rat wont detoriate over night.
thankss

Answer
Check out my website right away to read up about this.  Sandyscrittercity.com.  Refer to the page on titled "swollen foot"!   Its bumblefoot, but the problem is, most vets dont recognize it as such since classic bumblefoot causes lesions on the sole of the foot.  However, if the infection spreads rapidly, it can cause the entire foot to swell three times its normal size, often mocking a edema from a fracture.  The right vet must be seen or your rat wont be given the proper medication, which is also vital.  It is listed on my site.  Compare photos and print out this page to show your Vet.  Let him know this info has been approved by a certified Veterinarian.
