strange growths/lumps on the back

One of my pet rats keeps growing these strange...I'm not sure what to call them, but they seem to be scabs that just keep growing upward instead of getting better.  I took the first one off myself and it healed up well.  Then he grew another one, when I tried to take it off like the first one, I noticed that underneath the skin it was kind of a semi-soft white stuff.  Definitely not puss, but nothing I have ever seen before.  I'm quite worried and the local vets aren't as good with my babies as they are supposed to be.  I was hoping that you might be able to set my mind to rest while I work on getting an appointment with a better vet.

They do sound like abscesses but I would have to see a picture of one first.  Is there an odor?  THe pus can be hard sometimes instead of runny so the white semi soft stuff you see still may be pus.
