adding another rat

Question
I have one female rat and have had her for about 1 1/2 years. Is it safe to add another rat to the cage at this point? I saw that you mentioned in one of your other answers that a rat living by itself could lead to it getting depressed.

She lives in a massive cage so there is room for another rat.

Answer
Yes, while it can sometimes be a slower, more difficult process later in life, you can definitely introduce another rat at this point. Here's a good link to get you started: http://www.ratpalace.com/index.php?name=Sections&req=viewarticle&artid=3&page=1

It may also be a good idea to get two new ones because, while it may be difficult to think about, when your older one passes away, you will then have another one left by herself.

Good luck!
