Question
i have just found my alexandreine with blood all over her perchs, she has pulled one of her nails off, is this common? and is there any thing i need to do
thank you

Answer
Nicola,

Is it still bleeding?  If so, apply regular flour or cornstarch to the toe to stop the bleeding.  If bleeding persists, get her to an avian vet immediately.

Sometimes they get their toes caught in perches, toys, or food bowls and they will chew their toe off to free themselves.  Be sure any food bowls are securely fastened and there are no loose threads in perches, gaps in toys, etc.

This does happen quite often - that is why it's very important to be sure the things in her cage are safe and appropriate for her size.  If you think she chewed the toe off herself - this would be very concerning and you should get her to an experienced avain vet for a full evaluation.  There could be an underlying medical issue causing her to mutilate.

I hope this information helps and wish you and your bird the best.
