Question
Rev:

I have a 5 month old Yellow Collard Macaw. He has been making a grinding noise with this beak for the past week. This behavior has caused his lower beak to chip away... What would cause this? What can i do to help?

Thanks~

Answer
The grinding is not really unusual for this bird or most other parrots. It's a sign of contentment and doesn't usually cause any harm.
The flaking you see is also pretty common for this time of year (molting season) and for this age bird especially.
It should like layers are peeling off, right?

Whatever you're doing, it sounds like you're doing well. He's apparently relaxed and happy.

Hope this helps you feel better
