Baby Grey plucking

Question
I have a female african grey who is 7 months old. I bought her a little over a
month ago from a good local bird shop and she seems to be in great health.
She just has me worried because she over-preens her neck and chest right
down her keel bone. It's just down feathers she pulls, so its not severe
enough to see when she is just sitting cause her other feathers cover it, but
when I bathe her there's a little bald line going right down her chest. She has
good shredding and forraging means in her cage, and i feed her fresh parrot
foods such as chicken pesto pasta, birdie cornbread, sweet potato pie, and
other whole foods and fruits. I also supplement her food with a small amount
of vitamins and protien. Does it seem i'm doing something wrong? I know
that greys can just choose to pick feathers even if there's nothing wrong, but
i just want to be sure I'm not overlooking anything. I spray her daily with
moisturizing african grey spray, and shampoo her monthly with grey
shampoo, and i live near the beach, so it shouldn't be too dry for her. I also
have a green-cheek conure, so she always has a little buddy in the room with
her, but i give her more than enough attention anyways. any help will be
greatly appreciated. thanks.   -Cody,

Answer
I would stop using the shampoos and sprays, these could be irritating her. Just water is all that they should be sprayed with really. Also its not really a good idea to feed chicken as its kind of like us eating other humans, greys wouldnt eat other birds in the wild. Supplementing isnt a good idea if they are eating pellets that are a complete diet. I think she may need to see a vet to rule out disease as plucking at such a young age is very dangerous and if she continues to do this it could lead to self mutilation which is where they pick at the feathers and skin until it bleeds and its very harmful. It sounds like you are doing most things right but this is something that can not be left as its very serious. Good luck
