Hi Chrys. Thanks for answeing my past questions. I have another question. I have two lovebirds, blackmasked that are old enough to breed. One of them regularly stays in the nest box i dont see him/her outside a lot. I would think that this is normal However, i observed the other day that the lovebird inside the nestbox that day is usuaally the one outside. Meaning both of them now are spending time in the nestbox. Although the other one still spends more time in there. The next day i saw both of them in the nest box. I hope the statements does not confuse u. Does this mean i have 2 females? or does the male also spend time inside nestboxes? thank u for the time

Hi, PJ.  Thanks for posting.

In my experiences with lovebirds, both the male and female spend time in the nestbox.  The one who spends the most time in the nesting box is most likely the female.  Also, the female is usually very nasty when breeding, more so than the male.  Does this help you figure out who's who?

Answer
You're correct.  DNA sexing is 100% accurate.  Find Avian Biotech on the internet for information on how to DNA sex your lovebird.  Costs about $20 and you can get free sexing kits from the company and do the test at home yourself.  You have to send the test sample to the lab via snail mail, but can have results back in a week.
