Lovebird egg laying

Question
I have 2 lovebirds in separate cages.  My female (an older lovebird) is recently dropping eggs, 3 so far.  She has a fuzzy bird hut she spends a lot of time in & in the bird hut she will lay an egg, sit on for a day or so, then kick it out onto the cage floor.  I worry she'll become egg-bound.  My question is: Can I prevent her from laying eggs?  Will removing her bird hut stop her egg laying?  Or is it dietary?  Any advice will be appreciated.

Answer
Removing her hut would be a good idea as she seems to think it is a nest box to lay in. It may not stop her from laying eggs now that she has started. There's not really any way to stop her. You will just have to keep a close eye on her and you may need to change her diet. Laying eggs can drain calcium from her bones. I would suggest feeding her pellets instead of seeds if you aren't already. Most birds fed on seeds are lacking nutrients, with a complete pellet diet, extra supplements aren't needed but providing vitamin and mineral rich fresh foods is also a good idea. Harrisons high potency organic bird food is one I would recommend as it as it has a lot more nutrients in it than normal. Also a routine vet check wouldn't do any harm just to ensure she's in good health. Good luck with her!
