Question
QUESTION: Allright thankyou . i will do what you told me and leave the cage door open from time to time. when i leave it open should i leave it for any specific amount of time? like today i left it for an hour. and yesterday i did about 30 minutes then closed it. So what you are telling me is i cant reach in the cage not even to treat him at all because that will be violating his private space am i right? and the day that he decides to come out of the cage. is that when i can put him on top of the cage and start training or what? i finally joined the avairies site. Thanks again

ANSWER: You are very welcome, you should be spending around 3-4 hours a day with him, and at this point that means with the door open until you start to build his trust. You can reach in the cage to treat him if he looks comfortable with it. But do not do anything other than give him a treat. When he decides to come out of the cage do not pick him up, just let him explore and approach him and give him a treat, maybe talk to him. But again this is all up to his body language and if he looks comfortable. Then you can start some training. You can start the clicker training through the bars of the cage as well such as in the video.

QUESTION: Okay i get it. last question for a while ;)
Umm. what if the bird DOES come out. how long should he stay out exploring and how do i get him BACK in his cage? by picking him up or bringing the open door to him?

Answer
When he does come out and you are home and can stay home, just let him stay out as long as he wants to. If you have to leave, you can put new food in his cage and he may go back into the cage readily. You could also just step him up and see if he will go in his cage.
If it is an emergency you can towel him and place him in his cage. You should post on avian avenue to ask how to safely towel him :)

Good Luck!
