Question
QUESTION: The lower part of my son's macaws beak does not line up with the top of his beak, it goes to the left when he puts top beak over the lower part.  What can be done about this, it has not always been like this.  What can we do?

ANSWER:  When did this start?  Do you know of any injury or reason behind it?

Is this your only bird?  What kind of macaw?

Age?   Diet?

Whatever info and details you can offer will be very helpful.  Also, what part of the country are you in?

QUESTION: It started about 2 months ago, no injury or reason I know of, this is my only bird, blue and gold macaw, 10 years old, Exact parrot/macaw diet, I live in the South East part of the country.

Answer
It's hard to know without a hands on examination, but what you're describing is a condition called "Scissor beak".   It will only get worse without treatment and may end up requiring a lot of time, surgeries and more stress than either you or this macaw should ever have to go through.

Catching it early is the best thing you could have done.   However, a vet visit is absolutely necessary.  Sometimes a specialized filing can re-direct it over time.  We're talking about an office visit just once in a while to maintain it.  Depending on the findings the vet may employ the use of a cone or other setting, but what matters is that it's corrected.

Good job in paying attention and caring for your (son's) bird this well
