AMAZON PARROT SEEMS SICK

Question
I do not know what is wrong with my amazon parrot. He is a year old and I bought him like three weeks ago. I was told from the seller that he can eat everything, so I have give him fruits and sometimes crackers and vegetables. He was very alert and playful, but for the past three days he seems to have diarrhea, he is always sleeping, and his feathers are open that he looks fluffy. I will appreciate if you tell me what medication can I give him or what to do. Thank you.

Answer
-- First you need to determine the source of infection.  Run a fecal exam to diagnose whether this is parasitical, fungal or bacteria.  If bacterial, is it gram positive or negative?

-- Once you determine all of these things I can better help you choose the right prescription medication to use for an avian.

Get your labs run quickly though since birds this young can progress to death rather fast.

Also, I'm not hearing about any pellet base in the diet you're feeding.   And I'm not sure why you're feeding crackers at all.

Obviously, keep him in a brooder while undergoing treatment.  I would imagine that you've already got him in one.  It's not a bad idea to increase oxygen slightly, but maintain heat and humidity.

Good luck,
