Question
QUESTION: Hi! I have 4 crabs and they only come out at night, I live in New York, so its kind of cold up here and I have no heat source for them. They only move around when I pick them up.  Do you think heat has anything to do with there activeness?

Thank you!
ANSWER: Hello Nina,
A heat source is very important to hermit crabs! In their natural habitat is is warm and tropical! My crabs prefer temps...from about 75 to 80 degrees!  You can buy an under the tank heater..it looks like a black mat that sticks to the side or bottom of your tank!!!  Try to go to hermitcrabaddiction.net  They have tons of useful information on how to crate the perfect tank conditions!!! Good luck and happy crabbing!!!

QUESTION: Hey! I was wondering, I had a hermit crab that died a couple days ago, a few days before it had lost a leg (not a claw). When they lose a leg, does that mean it will die? And if so why?

Answer
Hello
Crabs can lose their limbs if they are stressed out!  It does not always kill them..crabs have the ability to grow new limbs ! If you did not have your crabs very long ...It probably died from PPS(post purchase syndrome) THat is where the conditions at the petstore are not the best or when they were shipped to the petstore! It does stress them out alot!  Hope this heps you! Happy Crabbing!!
