First Hermit crabs

Question
Hi. I was considering hermit crabs as my next pet after visiting one of my
sister's friend and seeing hers. I've been doing my research and I have a
few questions.

1. I plan on using a glass fish tank between 10 and 20 gallons. What
would be a good amount of crabs for a 10, 15, or 20 gallon tank.

2. I also plan on using play sand as substrate. Is this okay? How deep
should it be and how can I sterilize it?

3. My room is on average between 74-75* F. In addition, I will be using a
table lamp during daylight hours. Do I really need an Under Tank Heater?

4. How deep should my water bowls be?

5. Finally, could you give me some links of some good caresheets?

Thank you sooo much for your help.

Answer
1. It varies on the size of the crab. If you are talking small ones, golfball or smaller, no more than 1.5 per gallon.

2. It should be at least twice as deep as the largest crab, and moist, like sand castle sand. You can sterilize it by baking it in pans at 250 degrees for 20 minutes, then letting it cool.

3. The temp looks good but you need to watch your humidity carefully.

4. Waterbowls need to be deep enough for your crab to climb into and be at least half submerged in water.
