Wetting sand

Question
Hi,
We just bought 2 hermit crabs and are still learning about them. We have them in separate tanks and they both have sand substrates. One is a very fine sand and the other is more course. First, is that acceptable and secondly when we mist them is it ok to get the sand wet too? Also, the cages are plastic with venting in the top. How do we keep the inside humid for them?

Thanks for any input!

Answer
Not only is it okay, I recommend it. The moist (sand castle consistancy) sand will help when they make tunnels and cave. It should be twice as deep as your onger crab.

With plastic cages (or glass), moist substrate will hold moisture. If yours still needs a boost, try some natural moss. You can also cover the lid of your tank with saran wrap, make sure you leave a 1 inch opening, and keep adjusting until you get a stable humidity.
