Question
My hermit crab has definitly molted, his crunchy skeleton was laying outside of his shell. Now my question is how do i know if he made it through the process without dying he has not moved in a week.Is it safe to pick him up and take a quick peek?

Answer
Dear Tammy,
thank you for your question.
Did your crab molt without burying first? That's always problematic and shouldn't happen, usually they dig down to molt. I don't recommend picking him up now, because crabs are very easily stressed out during a molt, especially an already difficult molt, and handling him might be deadly. It's best to leave him alone. This may sound gross, but unless he really smells of rotting fish, he's still alive.
Here are some websites with a lot of excellent crab info that you may find useful:

I hope I was of some help to you
