Question

Hermit crab out of she
I recently bought 4 new crabs to put in with the two I already have. I think they have good living conditions; ocean water, clear water, 80 to 90% humidity in a 35 gallon tank, 3 or 4 different types of crab food, egg shells, etc.. Tonight when I went to check to see how they are all doing, I found one of them mostly dug under the sand (it's twice the depth of the largest one and then some), but he is not in a shell and his abdomen looks a bit like grey mush, although still one solid piece. I keep sort of a half shelled out log in there and he was dug under, sort of half way beneath the log. I found him when I gently lifted the log to check to see how many were under it in the house there. He is, of course, not moving. I don't know if I should cover him with a 2 liter bottle half for now, or really what I should do. I would really appreciate any advice you could give me. I could probably send a picture if you'd like. Thank you for your time.

Answer
Thank you for the photo. It does help quite a bit. If this is one of your new crabs I think it is safe to say that he was on his way to passing before you got him. Is he still moving?

Your humidity should be between 70 and 80 and temps the same. I would even let the humidity fluxuate down into the high 60s to give the new crabs time to adjust.

I'm sorry about your new guy, if he hasn't passed already, he will soon.
