my crab buried itself-is she okay?

Question
Hi,
Last night my crab was extremely active, more than usual, climbing, drinking and eating. During the night, she buried herself under a blue water dish ramp(not just a small shell dish) and it appears that she covered the hole back up that she dug to get under. I removed the dish to clean and refill with salt water and placed it back over top of her. She appeared fine. Her shell was intact and her antennae's were moving. We have a humidity gauze, so I know that's not why she buried. Is she okay under there, will she be able to dig herself out when she wants to or should we remove her. Our substrate is calci-sand. Thank you for helping.

Answer
Dear Christy,
thank you for your question.
Burying and digging is normal for crabs. Your crabs is probably getting ready to molt. Leave her alone now and don't dig her up even when she stays under for weeks, depending on her size it will take that long. She will come up by herself when she's ready. Keep offering fresh water and food.
Do you have only one crab? They are very social and need at least another friend. I also recommend changing the substrate. Calcisand is bad at storing moistness and the water tends to pool at the bottom of the substrate. Normal playsand or coconut fibre bedding (Eco Earth/Forest Bedding) or a mixture of both are the best substrates for hermit crabs.
