Question
Hi kristy I'm getting a 10 gallon glass tank with 2 crabs. I have all the equipment expect sand. I'm planning to buy a starter kit by zoo med. That kit includes sand and I know its not going to fill the tank. So again I'm planning to buy 2 or 1 extra bags of calci sand by t rex. So should I buy 2 bags or 1 bag of sand? Thanks

Sincerly
Kailee

Answer
Sorry I haven't answered before now Kailee, things sround the house have been crazy because My baby iguana ran away and my dog is pregnant, lol, it's crazy. Anywa, I would really suggest you did not buy any more calcisand I am afraid, It's rather expensive and you will need more like 4 or 5 bags of it EXTRA (besides the one from teh kit) Hermit crabs need very deep sand in their tank so they can burrow to molt. A hermit crab needs about 2-3 inches of sand. You can go to a place like Home depot and buy a 25 or 50 lbs bag of childrens play sand. Be sure to get a bag that doesnt have any holes in it or is wet (in other words, if the sand is stacked outside, don't buy it at all) The cost varies, but in general, it will be EXTREMELY cheap, compared with getting say 6 lbs of calcisand for the price of 50 lbs of play sand? Then you can store the sand you don't use in an air tight container and you can replace sand as needed from hermit crab poo or if you get mites or something.
