Question
Hi, I don't have any hermit crabs yet.  I've read you're supposed to put a heat mat under part of the tank - is this under the beach or forest like area?  Just trying to work everything out before I commit.  Thanks.

Answer
If you are just worried about heat, then either way will be just fine, the hermit crabs will just spend more time in one area or the other, but when I had my tank set up half and half (I have all sand now) I put it under the forest side, which helped increase humidity too, I just kept the bedding moist and it would evaporate off all day, keeping the humidity up REALLY high, which is good, now that I have all sand, I just place a big water bowl with a BIG sponge (but still leave enough room for the crabs to get down into the bowl on all sides) and the heater keeps the water just moist enough to gently evaporate, which doesn't raise it as much as with the bedding, but it doesn't bother me that much.
