QuestionMy sons friend dropped the cage and one crab fell and his shell broke into pieces. The hermit crab has the center piece of the shell still attched but it is very small. I bought two new schell and am hoping it moves to a new home and survies. Should I do anything to get the piece of shell off?
AnswerNo, just offer him plenty of other shells, the right size. Rinse them well and place them opening up in the tank filled with water and give him some privacy, he'll change. It's less stressful if you let him do it himself.
I will tell you that sometimes tramautic injuries (like from falls) don't show their effects right away and there are several cases where the crab died in the weeks following either from internal injuries or the stress.
