Question
QUESTION: Today when i went to check on my hermit crab a part off its leg had fallen off i have sand and its a damp sand is that ok and can i use town water or is that bad will my hermit crab (Eugine) die? what can i do to prevent him dying?

Regards
Ebony

ANSWER: town water is okay, make sure it is dechlorinated and that you are also chlorine free ocean style salt water. Crabs drop their legs when they are stressed. The most common types of stress are 1. new crab, 2, low humidity, 3. low temperature.

Is it a new crab? What is your temp/humidity?

QUESTION: no, i have had him for about a month and everything has been going great until now. he digs himself right down in the sand. We have high humidity. but we have had a few cold nights this fortnight, is real salt water from the ocean ok or does that harm them to? What about damp sand is that all right??

many thanks

Answer
damp sand is fine, I keep my substrate sand castle cosistancy. Sopping wet sand can be a problem but damp is actually a good thing, helps them tunnel.

As for ocean water. This one is tough and I will have to leave it up to you. Using pure ocean water (like real beach sand) you may be exposing them to harmful pollutants, the flipside is they will love it and it is much more natural. I can't tell you what to do on that one, it's  personal crabber choice.
