Housing Jumbo Hermit Crabs

Question
 Hi Kristy,
My Jumbo Hermit Crab lives in a 10 gallon glass tank with sand as the substrate.  I have a hermie hut and a climbing toy and also a rock and 1 extra shell.  Also an aquarium plant, food and water dish, and plenty of space for the crab to walk around in.  I feed him at night and bathe him at night and  clean the "poop" out of his cage daily, and play and change his water daily, too.  Anyway I have a question about Jumbo Hermit Crabs and I was wondering if I should get the same crab for his company?  But, I read a book on Jumbo Hermit Crabs and it said that Jumbos can't be housed with another hermit crab!
           I need this answer ASAP,
                   Thanks,

Answer
Hi Rachel, It sounds like you are taking very good care of your hermit crab, although I would suggest that you did not bathe him so much, a hermit crab should only be bathed once every two weeks or so, because hermit crabs work very hard to create the water conditions they like inside their shell that keeps their soft abdomen clean, soft, comfortable and protected, and every time you bathe him, you wash all the water he's created out of the shell and it can end up stressing him quite badly because every time you bathe him, he has to make all new water for himself. He should also have at least 2 more shells to choose from, in case he finds something wrong with the extra shell you have, he still needs to have more choices, hermit crabs can be very picky about shells. As for friends, Jumbos are very goo with friends, but only with those that are similarly sized. They may crush smaller crabs, but a crab that is at least half his size or larger will be able to live with him very well, but if you do get a crab that is smaller than him, you will also have to get 3 shells for that crab too, so you may need to get a bigger tank to hold the extra crab and his shells, if you can find a 15 gallon tank or larger, that would be good, and you can get them pretty cheap if they leak, since hermit crab cages don't need to hold standing water.
