Question
QUESTION: Hello! i had 5 hermit crabs. One got out and has been missing for 3 months, one molted and dyed and recently another hermit crab molted and she dyed. We didn't even touch them we fed them all the right things (not that they ate any) and kept it in good order but today i found my 2nd last hermit crab half out of its shell not moving. It doesn't smell so it might not be dead but how can i help? we have been doing everything right. What did we do and what can we do next time to help them :) thanks

ANSWER: The number one cause of death in hermit crabs is environmental.

Humidity and temperature must be between 74 and 82

Fresh dechlorinated water

Ocean style dechlorinated salt water

(the waters need to be deep enough for the crabs to climb into them and get the water into their shells)

Let's start with this list, do you have these things covered? Do you use a gauge for the temp/humidity?

QUESTION: My tank had been about 21degrees celcius the last few days, we have 2 bowls, one salt one normal but we boil it then let all the chlorine and floride evaporate. im not so sure about them being deep enough. they are about 1 1/2 cm deep. Well my big hermit crab had died(gone white) and we have a little one left. If you have any advice please do so! thanks

Answer
Make sure you are using dechlorinator. Chlorine will evaporate but chloramine will not. What type of salt are you using?

I would say hold off on getting a new one until you have your tank sorted out.

What is the humidity on the tank? What type of substrate do you use?
