Question
hello i'm kiana from ny. its winter right now and the tempature is not right for the hermit crabs. also i got have 3 hermit crabs. they are the ones that dont need salt water. one is the giant size and the other two are the small ones with a decorated shell. i got them at petco november i think. one of the small ones ( named yadahdah jonas. it is also my hermit crab named it after the jonas brothers and whenever i text yeah i come up with ydah. haha :D ) is out of its shell. i think it is dead because it hasn't moved in atleast a week or two. i REALLY need help. its been burying its shell in the sand and staying away from the other hermit crabs. i need help asap so i can know if it is molting or dead!!!
also the other small hermit crab ( Destiny hope my little sister who is seven named it after miley cyrus haha ) is bing mean to the other hermit crabs. it moves its annetannas up and down when near other hermit crabs. i need help with that too.
and one more the big hermit crab ( named Boss by my dad for my little brother haha ) is SUPER SUPER SUPER shy and will not come out of its shell. how can i get it to come out and play with the other ones?

Answer
Okay. I'll try to answer all your questions, let me know if I miss one.

First, all crabs need salt water, no matter what the pet store tells you. They need both salt and fresh.

What is your temperature and humidity. If it is too cold it will certainly affect the crabs and stress them enough to streak.

The antennae fighting is nothing to worry about, very natural behavior, just let them go. They will establish dominance and a pecking order on their own.

Some crabs are just very shy and there's not a lot you can do except take it very slow with them.
