Question
Hi We have had our two Hermit crabs for about 7 months now they both went through the molting process about 2 months ago and were fine afterward,I noticed the one hermit crab was hiding out in the cave we have in the tank all the time rarely coming out but he is out of it's shell. I caught it the other day going from it's original shell to a new one and then back to it's original and now he's wondering around without a shell on at all. He doesn't seem to be bothered by this, because he is still walking around the tank eating and drinking water. in fact he is more active now than he's been since he molted. The second Hermit crab is still in his shell and isn't bothering the one out of his shell. is it ok for him to be out like that and do you know what would cuase him to be out.

Answer
A shell is the only thing that protects a hermit crab. They won't leave thier shells unless something is irritating them in it or they are overheated.
Check the shells you have, make sure no substrate or anything is in there that might be irritating. Also add new shells, he may pick one of those.
Also check the temperature of the tank. Make sure it's in the proper range.
