Crab died while molting

Question
I've had 2 crabs almost a year.  One molted fine under a log.  I caught the other one in the process of shedding his skin yesterday.  I left it alone since the other one molted fine.  Right before bed I checked and found the other crab on top of the molting one.  I put the healthy crab in another tank, but this morning the molted crab had not moved.  I guess the other crab killed it, or it died and then the other crab was eating it.  Does that mean that crab is really aggressive, or should I get another crab and just isolate them when molting?

Answer
Hello Tiffany,
Are you positive your molting crab is dead?  Sometimes they are just very tired and don't move alot after molting?  If you found your healthy crab on top of the molter that will happen sometimes...a molting crab gives off a smell that crabs love and they want to eat the exoskeleton(skin)!  Usually crabs molt under the substrate. What kind of bedding do you have in your tank?  Next time I would iso your molter especially if he is doing a surface molt...which is not a good thing..it is better for them to dig under and do it under the bedding!  They will dig a hole and bury themselves!  Try offering you crabs some crushed egg shells ,just sprinkle them over the food you give them..It has calcium your crabs need!  Also try to offer a protein if you have not been doing that...your crab may have attacked the molter because of lack of protein! Use foods such as krill, shrimp,or fish...no seasonings on it!  You can also try peanut butter...some like it some don't!  Great job on having your crabs for alomst a year!! If you get a chance go to www.hermitcrabaddiction.net  lots of great information about hermit crabs!
Happy crabbing!
