A hermit crab really needs to be in a glass or plastic tank. They need damp substrate, fresh and salt water, places to climb and hide.

The temperature and humidity must be between 74 and 82.

They also need light on 12 hours of every day.

A shoebox is really not a very good place for a crab. Also with everything being damp it would get soggy and moldy.
