AGGRESSION

Question
Hi, I recently got 3 more hermit crabs. I have 2 x small,  2 small, 2 medium, and 1 large. They are in a 25 gallon tank with lots of hiding places, a UTH, and proper humidity. The large hermit is 2 x the size of my next largest. Anyway, he was fine until he changed into a new shell. Now he is really nasty. He chases the others around, turns them over, and tries to take them out of their shells, even though their shells are obviously too small. For now, he is in a 5 gallon isolation tank. Is there something I can do to make him friendly? All the others get along great.

Answer
Shell aggression can be dangerous for the victim crabs. You were right to separate them. Offer him lots of shells that are just a tad bigger than the one he is in. Try to find the same sort of shell he was in before he changed. They often stick with one type of shell their whole lives.
