Question
We recently got a larger dwelling for our daughters(shes away at college) hermit crab and are using sand now, we also put some brown thing in the cage that has something to do with humidity. our crab ripped the brown thing apart and burried itself under it 3 days ago-i don't believe the crab has eaten anything out of the food dish since. how long can hermit crabs go without eating. i know its still alive as of this morning but my husband says don't bother it. our daughter will be upset if the crab dies.(even though shes almost 19!!) she got the crab in june(07).sorry to ramble on.

Answer
A crab can and will bury itself for long periods of time. I'm not sure what brown thing you are talking about though, a sea sponge?

A crab will dig down to destress as well as to molt, a process where they shed their exoskeleton so that they can grow bigger. A molting crab can be down anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months depending on their size. Without needed to eat or drink.
