Question
My daughter, collecting shells, found a live hermit crab yesterday (Oct.7) on the beach in the nature preserve on Long Beach Island, NJ.  She didn't bring him home, but left him there.  The water temp is about 68 degrees right now.  Did he come out of the water, or did he more likely escape from being a "pet"?  Do you think he will survive?

Answer
It was more then likely a marine hermit crab as land hermit crabs aren't found that far north. Unless someone dropped off a land hermit crab that they had as a pet.

If it's a marine crab it will do ok. If it's a land hermit crab then there's a high possibility of it not making it.
