discolored shell

Question
I recently noticed that one of our hermit crab's shells is discolored.  It was a dark brown shell, but is now fading to white.  What could be causing this, and how can we address the problem?  Thanks for your help!

Answer
This is very normal. Shells are polished when you get them and over time, mineral deposits and calcium leaching can cause your crabs shells to lose their luster and go from smooth to sort of rough. It's not the prettiest, but it's normal and not harmful.
