Question
Hello,
I was wondering if I sent you a picture would you be able to tell me what species my to hermit crabs are? One is mainly blue, but has a barker pincher. The other is blue with an orange/reddish pincher. They both have a tan colouring on there legs, but not much. but if a picture would help better I can sent one of each of them.

So please I would love to know there breed so I can fix anything that might need changing in the tank... They love their salt water the best...

Any ways thank, Trista

Answer
Dear Trista,
thank you for your question.
Please send me pictures, I'll try to identify the species. I don't know if you can attach more than one picture here, but you can upload them at imageshack.us If you can, make pictures of the crabs from the front, the side and when they are in their shells, to see how they hold their legs then. From your description I'm guessing Coenobita purpureus, but colous is very much influenced by what they eat and varies a lot even in one species.
The conditions the crabs need are more or less the same for all species, though. Only C. perlatus (Strawberry crabs) need higher temperature and a deep saltwater pool.
Here are pictures of the most common crab species:

I hope I was of some help to you
