QuestionHi. We just got a male guinea pig from a pet store. He limps, due to a broken foot. According to the store owner, who is reputable, I am told, he broke it when he was a baby and it healed unset. He had been in the store for a long time (no one wanted him); he is probably about 7 or 8 months old. Staff at the store had cuddled him periodically, and when we brought him home yesterday he was fine with handling. This morning, however, he bit my child and myself in the middle of some holding (on a lap), and this afternoon, he bit me as I tried to take him from his cage. I wonder now if it was a good idea to rescue this chap from the store, and if he is set in his biting ways. Help!
AnswerThere HAS to be a reason for him biting...could his foot still be hurting?? You should definately make a vet appointment for that!!
Maybe he has mites...it could cause "crankiness"..it NEVER hurts to treat them for mites, even if they don't show signs of it!!
To treat them, go to a feed store, buy a tube of ivermectin paste (it is a horse wormer) then email me for directions on dosing.... jrosler04@wmconnect.com
You did the right thing by ggetting him!! He will soon be a loving family pet!!
