Cavy pregnancy

Question
Hi, I have recently, in the last 18 months, begun breeding cavies and after having done a fair amount of research most of the time I know what's going on (I've had 3 successful pregancies and one with complications resulting in sow and pups dying).  I have a pregnant cavy who is in the very late stages at the moment.  She started to open up last Wednesday (8th Sept) and reached a width of 1 inch by Sunday.  I have read and noted from experience that this usually means furrowing will occur within 24/48 hours.  It is now Tuesday evening (14th Sept) and she has still not gone into labour.  I moved her into the house away from the 2 other pregnant cavies I have about 2 weeks ago since I have read that a cavy who goes into labour in the company of other pregnant cavies can cause them to go into premature labour even if they are not ready.  She's eating normally and seems quite happy.  Could there be any reason why she's taking her time or is it just a case of letting nature take it's course?  Can you advise me on the best course of action (and what to do if she hasn't had them in the next week or so?)  Thank you very much, Helen x

Answer
Helen --

I would just let nature take its course.  Some animals take longer to pup than others.  However, if at any time she seems to be in a great deal of pain, but is not delivering, you may want to take her to a vet and have him check her out.

Hope this helps, please feel free to contact me if you have any more questions.  Good luck!
