bugs in bedding

Question
My kids have had 2 guinnea pigs in the same cage for about 3 years.  They take very good care of them.  Recently, we have noticed flying bugs in their cage and bedding(we use "carefresh"). They dont leave fresh vegetables in the cage.  The bugs look like big fruit flies.  Did you ever hear of this?

Answer
Hi Tina,

It's not unheard of, for some batches of bedding to have some bugs or insects in.

Not cleaning the wettest and dirtiest areas of the cage daily can lead to extra flies around/in the cage, most notably in the warmer weather. In the summer months, make sure your children clean the wettest and dirtiest areas of bedding each day, and replace with fresh bedding.

If the problem clears up and there are no problems with the next bag of CareFresh you get, then it may simply have been that batch.

Best Wishes,

- Laura
