Scent gland growth

Question
We have a male guinea pig, aged 2yrs. He has his own cage, has oaten hay as bedding, and he gets fed mixed dry food, carrots, parsley, tomato, corn, cucumber, and sometimes grass. We noticed that he has a warty growth on his scent gland with what looks like a white fungus coming out of it. None of our other male guinea pigs have this so we were wondering what this could be and what to do about it.

Answer
Hello Anna,

I'm assuming it's his grease gland (located where a tail would be if they had them). Get a soft tooth brush and a bit of baby or mineral oil and gently clean it. This should solve the problem. Some boars need frequent cleaning of their grease gland because they produce more than others. Some boars rarely, if ever, need it cleaned. The excess grease is usually a bit flaky and hard. If this doesn't seem like the problem, I've gotten something wrong, or if this doesn't fix the problem, contact me and I'll try again.
