Getting a friend

Question
We currently have a 5 month old male guinea pig.  We want to get a friend for him.  We know that a female would be better (once he is neutered).  We were wondering if there is a good age to get him a friend.  Should we get one now or wait until he is older?  How much older can he be and how old should the female be?

Answer
Mel,

You can get him one now or wait. It doesn't really matter how old he is since your getting a female. So you could wait till he was a year old or even 2 years old. It is up to you and how easily you can get the female. Either way it doesn't much matter as the friend is going to be female.

The female should be a little younger then him. This will help in making the best match. Not more then 2 months younger then him though, as that is a little to young and wouldn't make the best match at all. Since he could try a bully her or even she could try and bully him.

Also to help in making the best match for friends make sure the female's personality comes close to his own. That way they will both most diffidently get along with each other.

I hope this helps,
Take care now,
