Guinea pigs and menopause

Question
My guinea pig Ginger is about 2 to 2 and a half. About two weeks ago she started making this low guttural noise anytime I tried to pick her up and she'd scurry off. Now in the past week her belly has gotten swollen and her nipples have popped out. The belly isn't all that firm and I feel no babies. Plus I've been checking my other guinea pig and I'm almost positive it's a girl, plus I've had her for 9 months now out of her 10 month life. The pig I'm worried about being pregnant has been on anti-biotics twice. Once for a pneumonia sort of thing and another time she was on medicine to start her GI tract moving again and anti-biotics to cover all bases plus a pain-killer. Is it possible she's hitting a menopause sort of state? She's gone through a lot in her little piggy life and I'm hoping you can answer my question. Thanks.

Answer
Leslie,

So very sorry for just now getting back to you with a reply. Been having internet issues and working overtime.

Well, Guinea Pigs don't really hit a menopause state. I've had female Guinea Pigs who where 6 to 7 years old before they died and not one hit a menopause state. Menopause is more a Human thing then a mammal thing.

By all accounts it sounds like Ginger is pregnant. But that isn't really possible, so another possibility is she may have a problem with her reproductive system. Cysts and tumors on her ovaries can cause symptoms similar to a pregnancy, so could an infection. So you'll want to take her to the vet and have her completely looked at and checked out.

I hope this helps,
  Take care,
