Sick piglet

Question
Hi,

I noticed that my guinea pig, Peanut, had some blood in her urine.  We took her to the vet who gave her an antibiotic injection, however over the next couple of days, the bleeding got progressively worse, and more concentrated.  Also, it was more like a constant dripping, than only when she urinated.  We took her to a different vet who advised us to give her another antibiotic twice daily, using a syringe to feed it to her.  Peanut seemed to be getting better, but a couple of days later we found what appeared to be an internal organ or placenta or something in the cage.  It was probably about 3-4cm longand about 1-2 cm wide.  I know this sounds really odd and I have no idea what it was (there is no possibility of pregnancy).  After she passed this 'thing', she had diarrhoea for another couple of days...and then hey presto! she's back to normal, eating and drinking and running around like nothing ever happened.

Have you ever heard of anything like this before?????

Answer
Lauren,

So sorry for just now getting back to you with an answer, the wonderful internet decided it wouldn't work for a couple of days. =S

Anyways, it sounds like she had a Bladder stone or kidney stone. Which can cause pain and bleeding when urinating. The thing you found in her cage sounds like she just finally passed the stone. Though I would advise taking her to see a vet and have her either x-rayed or ultrasound done to make sure there isn't any more stones.

She'll need her diet to change to prevent any more from forming. So you'll want to cut back on her calcium intake, make sure that when giving broccoli or a dark green or anything else that is known to have a lot of calcium that it is only a little at a time and every other day. Make sure her pellet food is Timothy hay based and not Alfalfa, as Alfalfa has to much calcium for an adult Guinea Pig and should only be used for baby Guinea Pigs until they are a year old, and pregnant or nursing Guinea Pigs. Make sure that you read the ingredients on the back of the bag, anything that says Timothy Complete or Timothy Based is a pellet made from Timothy Hay and not Alfalfa. Start giving her that. And as always make sure she always drinking at least her 4 to 6 fluid ounces daily (that is about as much as an adult Guinea Pig drinks in a day).

I hope this helps,
  Take care,
     Jules
