itchy flakey skin

Question
My piggy has had really nasty dry skin since I got him.  Yesterday, I finally used my dog clippers to clip his hair really short (he actually sat still & seemed to like it).  Then I gave him his first bath (didn't like it).  I don't think he has mites or anything like that, because his cage mates don't have skin problems.  I cannot get Sudocrem or Prioderm in the US (prioderm is a prescription medication here).  Is "Bag Balm" ok? I read on a different website that that was ok to use on a piggy.  Also, instead of selsun shampoo, what about Neutrogena T-gel shampoo with coal tar?  Is that safe for piggies?  The T-gel covers a few more skin conditions than the selsun does.  Also, I'm not sure I'm actually going to be able to get Stripe to sit with the shampoo on his fur for 5 minutes, does that really make a difference?  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Teresa and Stripe
I think the coal tar shampoo might be a bot strong.
Can you get some shampoo with tea tree oil in it as that will soothe the skin and has antiseptic qualities. Not sure what Bag Balm is so I cannot advise on that, sorry
Since you have cut his hair right down the air will get to it and he will certainly feel a lot better for a good haircut.
The 5 minute waiting with the lather is just to give it chance to do its stuff, you could wait for 2 minutes instead if Stripe gets a bit fidgety.
